Hearing Dogs Christmas Market – Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th November

Wed, 11/15/2017 - 16:50

Hearing Dogs Christmas Market

Local charity Hearing Dogs for Deaf People is preparing
for the most magical season of all with a wonderful
Christmas Market.

The Saunderton-based charity is opening its doors to
Christmas shoppers and dog-lovers for two days of
yuletide fun, with plenty of activities and gift stalls
to get all the family into the festive spirit.

We are ready to kick-start the Christmas season with the
return of our much-loved Christmas Market at our Hearing
Dogs headquarters, nestled in the heart of
Buckinghamshire countryside.

We will have plenty of stalls providing beautiful hand-
crafted gifts and stocking fillers to tick off your
shopping lists as well as a special visit from Father
Christmas who will be in his grotto to give presents with
the help of his special elves and rein-dogs! And, if
that’s not enough, everyone will receive a complimentary
mince pie and warm mulled punch. So, dust off your
Christmas jumpers and join us for a magical weekend!

The Christmas Market will raise vital funds so that more
deaf people can be partnered with a life-changing hearing
dog. The Charity does not receive any government funding
and relies entirely on donations to continue its work.

Amersham Museum New Dinky Toy Exhibition

Fri, 10/27/2017 - 12:00

Amersham Museum Opens New Dinky Toy Exhibition

Amersham Museum’s extensive collection of Dinky Toys will be on display for the first time this autumn. From 18th October visitors to the museum will be able to see the museum’s collection of over 150 toys, on display together for the first time.

The museum was given the majority of the collection in 2006, when it was transferred from Wandsworth Museum. Originally amassed by local resident Chris Salaman, the vehicles were purchased from Butler’s toy shop in old Amersham in the late 1950s and early 1960s when he was a child. The collection includes cars, heavy goods vehicles and military vehicles and is complemented by a large number of Meccano magazines and Dinky booklets which advertised the toys. There are toys manufactured at the main Binns Road factory in Liverpool as well as those produced in France. There are also some modern replicas of both the British and French models.

Visitors to the exhibition can explore the collection, share their Dinky memories and try to order the cars in chronological order on the Dinky timeline. Younger visitors can participate in Dinky themed craft activities. On Saturday 11th November there will be a special Dinky Day, with activities, talks and an opportunity to meet Chris and find out about his collection.

The exhibition runs Wednesday-Sunday 12 -4.30pm from 18th October to Sunday 26th November.

The museum is open Wednesday – Sunday and Bank Holiday Mondays, 12 noon – 4.30pm. Admission is £3 adults, children free. Many of the activities for families are free after admission.

The Titfield Thunderbolt – 8 to 11 Nov. @ The Elgiva Theatre, Chesham – Chesham Theatre Company

Fri, 10/27/2017 - 11:51

Chesham Theatre Company’s latest production based on the Ealing Comedy classic “The Titfield Thunderbolt”, proudly sponsored by Barnett Waddingham

http://www.cheshamtheatrecompany.org.uk/

The following play will be performed :

The Titfield Thunderbolt
by TEB Clarke

Synopsis

The Titfield Thunderbolt: can the villagers of Titfield save their steam train?

The latest production is based on the classic Ealing comedy, “The Titfield Thunderbolt”, which starred the great Stanley Holloway and harkens back to the simpler days of steam trains and the closure of small branch lines by Dr Beeching.  Set in the fifties, it tells the tale of the villagers of Titfield and their plans to buy and run the line themselves or risk losing their commute to work and market, vying for business against Harry Crump, the owner of the local bus service.

Directed by Chesham’s own Trevor Pilling, we see the villagers and Crump go head to head and Crump plays dirty!  Who is the mysterious Miss Coggett?  Who is lurking about in the dark?  Will the vicar get his wish of driving the train?  And will the villagers triumph in the end?  Starring plenty of well-known local theatre faces, this play is a laugh-out-loud romp with plenty of old-fashioned humour for all the family.

Chesham Theatre Company prides itself on building their own sets – in the past they have created World War 2 France, the mysterious world of Terry Pratchett, many many front rooms and most recently a Hull football changing room.  This time round there will be a steam train on stage!  How are they going to do that?

Chesham Theatre Company is proud to be celebrating its 70th birthday this Autumn.  The well-known local group has been providing first-class community theatre since 1947.  One of its founder members, Gwenda Hudson still continues to be an active part of the group to this day!

CTC performs in both the Little Theatre by the Park and the Elgiva and puts on three productions a year, as well as hosting murder mystery events.

Helen Fry and Derek Nudd Launch Their Wartime Books at Amersham Museum – 6 October

Thu, 09/28/2017 - 15:45

Helen Fry and Derek Nudd Launch Their Wartime Books at Amersham Museum

Acclaimed authors Helen Fry and Derek Nudd will be launching their new wartime books at the museum on Friday 6th October.

Acclaimed author Helen Fry continues to research the role of British Intelligence in WWII with London Cage, which explores the interrogation of German prisoners of war behind locked doors in Kensington Palace Gardens. Helen’s extraordinary original research paints rich portraits of the interrogators and their prisoners, and gives disturbing, compelling accounts of daily life revolving around systemic Soviet-style mistreatment. Fry also provides sensational evidence to counter official denials concerning the use of ‘truth drugs’ and ‘enhanced interrogation’ techniques.

In Castaways Derek Nudd focuses on German prisoners of war who were brought to Latimer House and Wilton Park and who were questioned and ‘spied’ upon until their secrets were uncovered.

Derek notes, “I ignore the movers and shakers, the German generals and senior staff whose egos were carefully groomed in long-term stays at Trent Park. Instead I look at the constant procession of ordinary matelots and seagoing officers, who passed through Latimer House and Wilton Park, were drained of their useful information, and ‘dumped’ to regular prisoner-of-war camps.”

Helen and Derek will be in the museum from 2pm-4pm on Friday 6th October, talking to visitors (usual museum admissions apply). In the evening they will also each give a talk, take questions and sign copies of their books in the Market Hall, Old Amersham. Doors open at 7.30pm for an 8pm start. Tickets for the evening event cost £8 per person, £6 for Friends of the Museum and can be booked in the museum or online (www.amershammuseum.org)
